Forum in Dalian On July 21st,2002. WHTS collaborated with Five organizations to hold a wonderful symposium. 1993 Nobel Prize Laureate, Dr. Richard J. Roberts, Beijing Genomics Center,and Dr. Yingfa Ma, Professor at Missori University-Rolla, USA. In the morning session, each speaker gave one hour speech on the current trend in his field. Dr. Xinhe Bao, President of Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, and Senior President of WHTS, Dr. Xiodan Mei hosted the conference. It is a well organized successful conference with high standard. During the panel discussion, more than 30 local governmental officers, senior level researchers in biosciences, and the executives of biotech industries attend the discussion. Most of converning issues for the local biotech industry were discussed heatly. Dr. Richard J.Roberts and Dr. Henry Yang, Dr. Xiaodan Mei and other scientists made a lot of suggestions and advices for the industrial leaders, and emphasize that both basic research and concrete import high level talented professional into Dalian are important for the growth of this area. Vice Mayor, Dr. Yuling Dai hosted the discussion, and Vice Governer, Dr. Deren Xia meet with Dr. Richard J. Roberts to express thanks for his lecture to Dalian bioscientists,students and industrial leaders, and extend his invitation to him to call for more world top scientists to visit dalian. Dr. Xia mentioned that Dalian has establish the basis for the development of Biotechnology, Government build many incubators, and construct a biopharmaceutical park in DD Port (DNA & Digital Port) by the coast of Dalian Ocean. Government is introducing venture capital mechanism to encourage more overseas Scholars to join DD Port to seek entrepreneurship. Hope that Biotechnology is the key industrial sector in Dalian economic growth in the next 5 years. The vice Director of Dalian Science and Technology Bureau mentioned that many Chinese Incubators were established, however, simply don't know how to run those incubator and make it really helpful for innovation. She asked what is the the successful models of foreign scientific incubator. Rich discribed the way American Incubator operate, and make some good suggestions During the Tech tour, Dr. Richard J. Roberts also visit some biotech companies such as Zhen-Ao Biology Co. Ltd., Dalian Pfyzer Co. Ltd. and Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Acadnemy of Sciences. Dr.Roberts feel very interesting to interact with talented students. He suggested that next forum may provide for those world top scientists to have more opportunities to meet with graduate students. There are three good parts for such arrangement: 1) Students can be inspired by leading scientists' thoughts and their successful experiences; 2) Students may avoid many potential difficulties by discussing the problem they currently have, those leading scientists may offer good suggestions and potential solutions for them; 3) Leading scientists also need to recruite talent student to do research. Dalian has many well-establish research institutions, it may provide a lot of excellent intellectuals for the global scientific world. More than 250 audience attended the forum. Afterward, Rich's family have a brief tour around the beautiful city. They feel surprise that in the Northern China, western people can see such a civilized and modernized city, and his family really have fun time in Dalian |
